In Egypt, the crisis fosters the hardship of wheat farmers

The announcement made by the government about wheat price indexation based on international prices, which was subsidized until then put small producers in disarray.

The gentle March sun that irradiates the green fields announces the approach of the long awaited harvest season of April. In Harab Shant, a small village under Beni Suef governance, on the banks of the River Nile, 150 km south of Cairo, farmers can still not be considered happy. Like Nour Eddin Gaber, wheat farmers have eyes wrinkled by heat and uneasiness. “The authorities make decisions that affect us directly without ever asking for our opinion”, complains this friendly generational farmer from the outset.
